The creative spark for BaseballRetrospective.com began many years ago when BBR founder Matt Rectenwald was a young baseball fan, one among many. He would spend days poring over baseball statistics, listening to Brewers games on the radio, and daydreaming about the game.

When Mr. Rectenwald first read Bill James Baseball Abstract, everything began to change. The way he looked at the game changed. He become more inquisitive, he began to look deeper into the game, the players, the numbers.

Over the years Mr. Rectenwald has been a moving force in the small niche world of simulation baseball, playing baseball using a simulation engine. This began with Hardball, continued to Earl Weaver Baseball, and finally to Out of the Park Baseball, for which Mr. Rectenwald currently serves as a Beta Tester.

Mr. Rectenwald has been a part of many successful online simulation leagues, including possibly the longest running of them all, the Global Baseball Consortium Prime League (which still uses Earl Weaver Baseball to this day and is currently in its 35th season of play.

After having a hand in the creation of several other leagues over the years, Mr. Rectenwald currently devotes his time to Other Reality Baseball 2, a historical league using Out of The Park Baseball. This league focuses on the expansion era, and does not effectively mirror history but uses it as a basis and allows some random development to take place. This helps to put the focus on some players who didn’t have as successful of a career in their actual career. In the past season, we have begun bringing in successful minor leaguers that never played in the major leagues for one reason or another.

The discovery of some of these players who never got a fair shake led to a desire to bring their stories to light. At BaseballRetrospective.com, we will focus on the players who don’t have the spotlight shone on them often. We will look for the stories that were lost over the years. Our aim will be to enlighten even the most knowledgeable baseball fans.

Welcome to BaseballRetrospective.com! Looking forward to what we might uncover!
